Overview of Far From Home:
This is a blunt review of the spectacular Nigerian young adult Netflix original series, 'Far From Home,' with a touch of how the main character, Ishaya Bello(Mike Afolarin), navigated friendship—it was pathetic.
Were there any of his friends he didn't endanger?
Far From Home Trailer:
Brief Review of Far From Home:
The series began with the lead character, Ishaya Bello, alighting from a luxurious vehicle into his first art exhibition. He awakens to the vigorous call of his sister, Rahila(Tomi Ojo). He is a poor boy with a passion for art.
There are a series of unexpected turns and twists. Ishaya wins a scholarship to study in the most elite private school in the country, Wilmer Academy, through cheating. Sadly, Rahila's dream was to be a student at the school, and she said he stole her dreams to follow his.
Ishaya had stolen from his bosses at the Rush club to pay for the scholarship exam. His selfish act marked the beginning of doom for himself and everyone close to him. He became a slave to illegal businesses and his bosses- Government(Bucci Franklin) and Oga Rambo(Bolanle Ninalowo).
The storytelling was impeccable. I am proud that Nollywood remains on the map. On the other hand, I could see a shadow of Hollywood or foreign patches in the plot.
Many would agree that Nigerian schools, to some degree, condemn beards. I found the tinted hair, full beards, short skirts, and extreme hairstyles a bit off Nigerian schools' values. Asides from that, I love it.
Let's Talk About Ishaya Bello's Friendships:
Ishaya and Michael (His best friend)
Michael was that friend whom Ishaya told everything. Ishaya ran to Michael when he needed help, and that got Michael into trouble because Ishaya couldn't pay back the Ajo(thrift) money he borrowed from Micheal.
At some point, Michael called Ishaya selfish and added, "...with this your bad character, pesin fit just die and I no wan die." Michael cut off Ishaya for his own safety. (I must commend him for that.)
However, their friendship didn't end there. They reconciled later on, then Ishaya sent Michael N120,000.00 with the caption, "I'm sorry."
Ishaya and Frank (His Roommate)
Frank(Emeka Nwagbaraocha) was the brilliant nerd of the class who was susceptible to bullying. He was the runner-up in the scholarship exam after Ishaya, who had a perfect score through cheating.
One of their first encounters was when Ishaya saved him from a senior bully, Atlas(Olumide Oworu). They later became roommates. All was well and good until a one-sided fight.
Frank liked Rahila, Ishaya's sister. Guys don't want you to date their sisters💀, but I didn't expect the same reaction since Frank was a cool guy.
Frank and Ishaya never reconciled till the end of season one. It wasn't because of Rahila. It was because Ishaya planned Frank's kidnapping, which got him traumatized.
Ishaya's Other Friendships in Far From Home
Ozinna is also Ishaya's friend. He drew her in twenty minutes on the first day of school. Frank, Ozinna, and Ishaya were a trio—The rich nerd, the elite extrovert, and the less privileged boy on scholarship.
Carmen(Elma Mbadiwe) is the school owner's daughter, whom Ishaya likes. When Ishaya was in trouble after kidnapping Frank, he called on her, Reggie(Natse Jamide), Ozinna, and Frank to help him because she was the next target.
Adufe is Ishaya's ex-girlfriend who goes deeper and deeper into illegal businesses after they broke up.
The Conclusion:
Everyone who came in contact with Ishaya faced one problem or the other. Not because he was cursed but because of his decisions.
No one is safe. I hope Netflix announces the second season soon! Let's anticipate season 2 together.
